FIT Testing
Fit testing is one of the most important aspects of any job related to the Oil & Gas general industry. Respiratory protection must be worn in any oil and gas environment. It remains to be a key element in saving lives where hazards are present. Some of the hazards identified in the general industry are (Toxic Gases, Vapors, and Respirable Silica Dust/Sand.)
A fit test and medical evaluation is required by OSHA before you can don or doff a respirator. New rules apply to Respirable Silica Dust, OSHA (Rule 29 CFR 1926.1153), effective date, June 23, 2018. Whether this be a half mask respirator to filter surrounding air or a full-face respirator that is connected to a supplied air system, the evaluation and fit test will be required.
A fit test is done to ensure the mask and your face have a positive seal with no leaking sources revealed. Wearing the required respiratory protection helps to ensure that you are able to safely work in many hazardous environments identified in the Oil & Gas General Industry. Protecting yourself from hazards should always be your first priority.
